How to Take a Passport Photo at Home
How to take a better passport-style photo at home
Start with the issuing authority
Before taking the photo, check whether your passport or visa authority allows a self-taken photo at all. Some authorities require a commercial photographer or prohibit digitally altered images.
Set up the room
- Choose a plain wall or backdrop in the colour required by the authority.
- Use soft, even light from the front; avoid a strong ceiling light or side light that creates shadows.
- Stand away from the wall when possible so your body does not cast a hard shadow behind you.
Camera position
Place the camera around eye level and keep it straight rather than pointing noticeably up or down. A second person taking the photo is usually easier than a close selfie because it reduces perspective distortion. Leave enough room around the head and shoulders for the official crop.
Expression and appearance
- Look directly into the camera.
- Keep both eyes clearly visible.
- Use the expression required by your authority, commonly neutral with the mouth closed.
- Avoid glare, shadows and accessories that obscure facial features.
Do not fix a bad capture with AI
If the authority prohibits alteration, retake a photo with better lighting/background rather than replacing the background or changing facial appearance digitally. A technically neat image can still be rejected if its creation method violates the rules.
