Common Passport Photo Rejection Reasons
Common passport photo rejection reasons — and how to avoid them
Wrong size or head position
A photo can look good but fail because the physical dimensions, head size or eye position are outside the authority’s allowed range. Check the exact country and application type.
Poor lighting or background
Hard shadows, textured backgrounds, glare, washed-out skin tones and insufficient contrast are frequent problems. Fix these when taking the photo rather than relying on editing when editing is prohibited.
Expression, pose or obstruction
A tilted head, closed eyes, hair across the eyes, inappropriate headwear, tinted glasses or a non-permitted expression can make an otherwise sharp photo unusable.
Digital alteration
Several major passport authorities explicitly reject photos altered with retouching software, filters or AI. Background replacement can itself be disallowed. Check the current rule before using any automated editing feature.
Wrong submission format
Printed applications and online applications may have different rules for pixel dimensions, file size, photo paper, photographer details or the number of copies. Follow the instructions for the exact submission method you are using.
