UK Passport Photo Requirements

UK Passport Photo Requirements: printed and digital rules

Printed photos

For a paper application, UK printed passport photos are 45 mm high by 35 mm wide. The crown-to-chin image height is generally 29–34 mm. Two identical printed photos are required for a paper form.

Digital photos

For an online passport application, GOV.UK requires a digital photo. It must be clear, in colour and unaltered, and the online process has its own minimum pixel and file-size requirements.

Expression and background

  • Use a plain light-coloured background with no texture or pattern.
  • Use balanced lighting without shadows on the face or behind you.
  • Face forward with eyes open, a plain expression and mouth closed.
  • Head coverings are generally allowed only for religious or medical reasons.

Editing warning

GOV.UK says passport photos must be unaltered by computer software. Do not use background replacement, beauty retouching or AI enhancement on a photo you intend to submit for a UK passport.
